S-Fold Curtains: the Modern Wave

S-fold — also called wave or ripple fold — is the heading most people picture when they think of a modern curtain: soft, even waves that run the full width of the track and stack neatly to the side. It suits sheers and blockouts alike, and it is what we fit most.

Diagram — the three heading styles, seen from the front

S-fold (wave)

Even, continuous waves on a track. The modern favourite.

Pinch pleat

Hand-sewn pleats in groups of two or three. Classic and formal.

Eyelet

Metal rings on a rod. Relaxed, deep folds.

Why S-fold

The wave comes from the track, not the sewing: the curtain hangs from gliders spaced evenly along a special S-fold track, so every fold is the same depth whether the curtain is open or closed. That is what gives it the clean, architectural look, and it is why S-fold curtains stack so compactly when open — important on a wide window where you want the glass clear during the day.

It works with almost any fabric. On a sheer it gives a soft, continuous ripple; on a blockout it reads as a tailored wall of fabric.

Track, ceiling or wall

S-fold needs its own track. We fix it to the ceiling for a floor-to-ceiling drop (the most popular choice in new builds), or to the wall above the window where the ceiling is not suitable. Tracks can be joined on site for very wide spans and bent for bay and curved windows. Our standard tracks are kept in white and black; other colours are ordered per job.

The other headings

S-fold is not the only option, and it is not always the right one. Pinch pleat (double or triple) gives a more formal, hand-sewn look and sits well in traditional rooms; eyelet hangs on a rod with deeper, looser folds and suits a casual room or a feature window. We talk you through it at the measure, with the samples in front of you.

Made in our own workshop

An S-fold curtain is cut with the fullness the track needs, sewn with the heading tape that holds the wave, and weighted at the hem so it hangs straight. We have been making curtains in our own workshop since 2014; every piece is checked before it ships, and the install is covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between S-fold and wave curtains?+

Nothing — S-fold, wave and ripple fold are different names for the same heading: a curtain on a track with evenly spaced gliders that form continuous S-shaped waves.

Can S-fold curtains go on a rod?+

No. The wave is made by the track and its gliders, so S-fold needs an S-fold track. If you want a rod, eyelet is the heading to choose.

Does S-fold work with blockout fabric?+

Yes. Blockout S-fold curtains are common in bedrooms and living rooms, often behind an S-fold sheer on a second track.

Can the track be fixed to the ceiling?+

Yes, and in most new homes that is what we do — it gives the floor-to-ceiling look. Where the ceiling is not suitable we fix to the wall above the window.

Can S-fold curtains be motorised?+

Yes. We fit motorised S-fold tracks controlled by remote or phone app. Ask at the measure and we will quote both ways.
