Blockout Curtains for Darker, Quieter Rooms

A blockout curtain stops the light, holds the heat in winter and keeps the sun out in summer. Ours are made to your windows in our own workshop from Turkish blockout fabrics, measured at your home and installed by our team.

What a blockout does

A blockout fabric is woven or coated so light cannot pass through it. Closed, it makes a bedroom properly dark — for shift workers, young children and anyone who wakes with the sun. It also does real work on temperature: a fitted blockout curtain is one of the most effective things you can add to a window to keep warmth in during a Melbourne winter and heat out in summer.

How dark the room gets depends on the fit as much as the fabric. A curtain that runs wall to wall and floor to ceiling, with the track returned to the wall at each end, leaves very little for light to sneak around. That is why we measure every window ourselves.

Fabrics we bring to your home

Blockout fabrics come in far more than plain colours. We carry Turkish blockouts with the look of linen, velvet, soft textures and subtle weaves, in neutrals and deep colours, so the curtain can be the feature of the room rather than a compromise. You see them at the measure, in your light.

  • ✓Linen-look and textured blockouts
  • ✓Velvet-look blockouts for a richer room
  • ✓Plain neutrals and deep colours
  • ✓Three-pass coated fabrics for full darkness

Blockout behind a sheer

Most of the bedrooms and living rooms we fit have two layers: a sheer in front for the day and a blockout on its own track behind it for the night. Both run on the same bracket system so the window stays neat. Because the measure and the install visit are shared, we price the second layer as an add-on to the first.

How we make them

Cut and sewn in our own workshop to the measurements we took at your home, with the heading you chose — S-fold, pinch pleat or eyelet — and weighted hems. Fitted by our own installers, and covered by our 2-year workmanship warranty.

  • ✓Made to measure, never off the shelf
  • ✓S-fold, pinch pleat or eyelet heading
  • ✓Track returns to the wall to stop light leaks
  • ✓Installed in 2–3 weeks, installation included

Questions people ask

Will the room be completely dark?+

Very close to it. A blockout fabric itself passes no light; what remains is the small gap at the edges and the top. We minimise that by running the curtain wall to wall and floor to ceiling and returning the track to the wall. For total darkness in a bedroom, a blockout curtain plus a blockout roller blind in the window is the belt-and-braces option.

Do blockout curtains help with heating and cooling?+

Yes. A fitted, lined blockout curtain traps a layer of still air against the glass, which is where most of a room's heat is lost in winter and gained in summer. Customers notice it most in rooms with large windows.

Can I have a blockout and a sheer on the same window?+

Yes — it is our most common setup. Sheer in front, blockout behind, each on its own track. We price the second layer as an add-on.

What colours are available?+

Far more than white and grey. Linen-looks, velvets, textures, neutrals and deep colours from Turkish mills. We bring the samples to your home so you can see them in your own light.

How long does it take?+

2–3 weeks from your deposit, including making in our own workshop and the installation booking.
